Girls on the Run returns to the JCC starting
March 23

Girls on the Run, an afterschool running program for girls of all fitness levels in grades 3–5, will again be offered this spring at the JCC of Syracuse, 5655 Thompson Rd. in DeWitt. The 10-week course will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. starting March 23.

Girls on the Run logo. The program encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. It brings girls together to have fun, share experiences with one another, become physically and mentally stronger, set goals for making healthy choices, learn more about being a good friend and help others in the community. Throughout the course the girls also will be training to participate in Paige’s Butterfly Run on June 6.

“We’re very pleased to be bringing back Girls on the Run to the JCC,” said Mick Hagan, director of Children and Teen Services. “Along with promoting physical fitness, the program teaches some valuable life lessons. It was very popular when we last offered it a year ago.”

The Girls on the Run program at the JCC will be taught by trained coaches and costs $125. This fee includes a healthy snack at each session, lesson materials, T-shirt, water bottle and entry in Paige’s Butterfly Run. The JCC of Syracuse course is a program of Girls on the Run of the Finger Lakes.

Started in 1996 in Charlotte, North Carolina, Girls on the Run provides pre-adolescent girls with the necessary tools to embrace their individual strengths and prepare them for a lifetime of self respect and healthy living.
