Tap dance classes return to the JCC
starting Sept. 30

The JCC of Syracuse will again hold weekly adult tap dance classes this fall starting on Sept. 30. Because of upcoming Jewish holidays, for the first two weeks only—Sept. 30 and Oct. 7—the class will meet on Wednesday evenings. Thereafter, on Oct. 13 and for the remainder of the fall, classes will be held on Tuesdays. The classes will run through Dec. 15.

Barry Shulman, center, leads a tap dance class at the JCC of Syracuse.Four class levels will be offered each night: remedial starting at 6:30 p.m., beginner at 7:00 p.m., intermediate at 8:00 p.m. and advanced at 9:00 p.m. The adult tap classes are open to anyone ages 12 and older, and no prior dance experience is necessary. The cost is $5 per person each evening. RSVP is not necessary and plenty of free parking is available.

Local attorney and choreographer Barry Shulman will once again lead the classes. Shulman, who has held the classes the past several years at the JCC, teaches “New York City” style. Students do not need to commit to every class and can attend as much as they’d like.

“If you’ve ever wanted to try tap dancing, these classes are a great way for both men and women to ‘dive in’ and experience something new,” says Joe Yager, JCC sports and fitness director. “The remedial and beginner classes will quickly teach you the basics and have you coming back for more. Barry does a great job of getting both newcomers and experienced dancers alike moving and having fun each night.”

Shulman, who is of counsel to the law firm Gilberti, Stinziano, Heintz and Smith, has taught many principal dancers on Broadway and with national tours. He keeps the cost of the tap classes to a minimum and donates the proceeds to the JCC of Syracuse. Shulman received the JCC’s Kovod Gadol award in 2014 for his extraordinary commitment, energy and loyalty to the JCC.
